Even if you enjoy a job, if the compensation isn’t enough for you to support your lifestyle, you won’t be able to realistically commit to it for five years. In addition to salary, consider the quality of the health insurance and retirement package to ensure it won’t hold you back financially over the long term.  

Location 

Keep in mind the importance of location in terms of job satisfaction. If a job requires a long daily commute, it can quickly become a major inconvenience that affects your overall well-being. Before you accept a job, make sure the location and commute time fits your needs. 

Culture Fit 

The key to a successful long-term job isn’t just about the work itself. There’s more to having a job than just the duties and responsibilities- the culture plays a major role in how happy you’ll be there. Do some research into the type of culture a company has before you accept a job so you feel confident there won’t be a clash in core values, work environment preferences, etc.

Being overworked will lead to burnout, which can have a negative effect on your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.  

Opportunity for Growth 

Five years is a significant amount of time in your career path. Within that time at an employer, you should ideally be able to gain new skills and increase your responsibilities. Otherwise, you risk having little to show for your time there, which can hold your career back from advancement in the event you’re ready to move onto another employer after five years. Look into opportunities for growth at an employer, such as mentorship or training programs and how often they promote from within, to get a sense of the likelihood of growth opportunity there.
