How to Lead Your Team to Success in the New Year
January 8th, 2021The best leaders avoid complacency at all costs and know there is always room for improvement. The fresh start of a new year is an opportune time to re-evaluate your current strategy to become even more effective. Learn more about how to lead your team to success in the new year:
Continue with Autonomy
Due to the necessary changes in procedure due to the pandemic in 2020, employees have been given more autonomy than ever before. If your team has demonstrated they are just as productive without constant oversight, try to continue offering that autonomy as much as you can while still operating within your company’s specific needs. When employees are given space to complete their work on their own, they feel more ownership and thus are more likely to go above and beyond than if they feel micromanaged.
Focus on Meaning
If employees feel like their work isn’t important beyond just earning a paycheck, it’s unlikely they will have the motivation to do more than the bare minimum. Focus on meaning as you lead your team – highlight how their work is helping others or how it plays a role in the bigger picture of the company’s success.
Lighten Up
Work doesn’t have to be all serious business all the time for employees to be productive. In fact, if you can lighten up the work environment and inject some fun into the workday, your team will be in better spirits – and more likely to handle stress and difficult or frustrating tasks with a better attitude.
Keep Your Word
Earning your employees’ trust is essential for them to respect your authority. Make it a priority to keep your word – if you make promises, follow-through (even if there won’t be repercussions for you). Otherwise, your employees won’t view you as having integrity and won’t be as inclined to take you seriously as a leader they want to emulate.
Hone Your EQ
Emotional intelligence, or EQ, refers to one’s ability to recognize their own and others’ emotions and how they influence behavior. To lead your team to success in the new year, you can’t simply manage processes – you also need to manage people who are unique beings with their own emotions and motivations. Focus on being self-aware and regulating your own emotions at work, as well as being more socially aware of your employees’ feelings.
